TIPS FOR KEEPING FEEDER INSECTS

Karen Guillen - 13 June 2001

Feed quality food with variety (remember this is what your herp will be eating)

  • fish flakes, rat/mouse pellets, soft dog/cat biscuits, pieces of hard vegies/fruit
    eg. carrots, apples
  • food should always be available
  • add a pinch of powdered multivitamin & calcium supplement (50/50 mix) each time you add new food (fish flakes are good for this type of supplementation)

House appropriately

  • crickets especially will not live long in punnets
  • need space - plastic "mouse containers" are good and come in various sizes
  • need ventilation
  • need hides - egg cartons or dry leaves
  • floor can have substrate eg
    • potting mix (need to change monthly or so)
    • or leave bare

Light - need day & night cycles

Heat

  • crickets especially need to be kept warm - 25C or so
  • heatmat or incandescent bulb

Water

  • always available
  • pebbles/stones in water dish will stop drowning
