TIPS FOR KEEPING FEEDER INSECTS
Karen Guillen - 13 June 2001
Feed quality food with variety (remember this is what your herp
will be eating)
- fish flakes, rat/mouse pellets, soft dog/cat biscuits, pieces of
hard vegies/fruit
eg. carrots, apples
- food should always be available
- add a pinch of powdered multivitamin & calcium supplement (50/50
mix) each time you add new food (fish flakes are good for this type
of supplementation)
House appropriately
- crickets especially will not live long in punnets
- need space - plastic "mouse containers" are good and come in various sizes
- need ventilation
- need hides - egg cartons or dry leaves
- floor can have substrate eg
- potting mix (need to change monthly or so)
- or leave bare
Light - need day & night cycles
Heat
- crickets especially need to be kept warm - 25C or so
- heatmat or incandescent bulb
Water
- always available
- pebbles/stones in water dish will stop drowning
