Licence Application To obtain a licence for one of the above categories it will be necessary to complete a licence application form, then attach documentation detailing specifics supporting your application. As a guide the type of information required in the attached document should address the following. However, any additional information will add support to your case. Husbandry Requirements
  • Management and husbandry expertise. This can be supported by including references from experienced herpetologist or by conducting an interview with Departmental staff
  • Housing facilities
  • Knowledge of growth parameters eg., juvenile to adult python
  • Knowledge of captive environmental requirements in this region
  • Knowledge of common diseases
  • Knowledge of nutritional requirements - long term sourcing and supply
  • Breeding plan
  • Commitment - some of these animals live much longer than cats or dogs
Conservation Issues
  • Natural habitat and geographical distribution of the species
  • Conservation status of the species
  • Suitability for domestication and hand rearing
  • Disposal of surplus, dead or unwanted animals
Legal Issues
  • Knowledge of legal responsibilities under the Nature Conservation Act and Animal Welfare Act
  • Responsibility with regards to the security of rare, dangerous or Vertebrate Pest Committee listed species
  • Contingency plan in case of escape, particularly for dangerous, VPC or environmentally sensitive species
