Turtles / Tortoises

Please Note: It is illegal to take any reptiles from the wild, this includes turtles.
Captive reptiles should also not be released into the wide as they will surely die and in all probability could not fend for themselves.

In Australia there are no land dwelling tortoises as such. All tortoises in Australia typically freshwater tortoises that inhabit rivers, swamps, lakes, etc, but can be found occassionally travelling overland from one body of water to another. There are 16 species of tortoises in Australia.

Only one of these is a resident of Canberra, namely the Common Long-necked Tortoise (Chelodina longicollis).
